1960 — The Vision Formed

The ministry begins in the hearts and minds of the congregation at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church in Jeffersonville, Indiana, who conduct a local survey and determine that Scottsburg needs a Southern Baptist presence.

January 1961 — Arrival in the Snow

Reverend Iva K. Holmes and his family arrive from Paint Rock, Texas, on a cold, snowy morning to establish the Southern Baptist Mission. Services are initially held in a rented home on South Bond Street before moving to the American Legion Hall.

May 15, 1961 — The Old Funeral Home

The mission rents the old Vest funeral home at McClain and Second Street, which serves as its meeting place for the next six years.

1961 – 1962 — Pastoral Transitions

Due to ill health, Rev. Holmes returns to Texas. Dr. Baker of Seymour and student-pastor Reverend Robert Steckert fill the pulpit sequentially, followed briefly by Reverend Wilkerson.

August 8, 1962 — Scottsburg Baptist Chapel

Reverend Sanford Board accepts the call as permanent pastor, faithfully commuting from Clarksville for five years. Under his tenure, the congregation grows spiritually and officially names the mission the Scottsburg Baptist Chapel.

April 17, 1966 — Breaking Ground

After a year of intense planning, a groundbreaking ceremony is held at 901 West McClain, initiating construction on the permanent church home.

Early 1967 — A New Home

The congregation moves its services into the newly constructed building on West McClain, formally dedicating the facility on July 9, 1967. Later that year, Reverend Robert Steckert returns to Scottsburg to resume the pastorate.

June 28, 1970 — Constitution and Naming

The mission achieves official church status during its constitution services. Charter members, including Jean Fultz, vote to officially name the congregation Grace Baptist Church.

1993 — A Shift in Identity

The congregation and the board vote to change the ministry's name to First Southern Baptist Church of Scottsburg.

2014 — Becoming Turning Point Church

Acknowledging a fresh structural direction, the church changes its name to Turning Point Church (TPC). The church explicitly reframes its personal vision around Romans 3:23, declaring themselves “A people of second chances and new beginnings,” while maintaining its core global missions affiliation.

2020 — Outreach Expansion Under Pastor Jon Jackson

Led by Pastor Jon Jackson, the ministry intensifies its local civic footprint during a time of widespread societal hardship, expanding its food pantry and launching targeted ministries for local shut-ins and the homeless.

2022 — The Digital Frontier

TPC launches its Reaching Higher video podcast and digital media presence, expanding its reach with simple, easy-to-follow teaching straight from the Bible.

2026 — Digital Stewardship and Preservation

The church initiates a major overhaul of its digital presence. Its history and beliefs are fully preserved on the web, alongside easy-to-use tools like online prayer walls to help serve everyone in the community.
